Personality: Lan Wangji is the sort of person who is very reliably himself throughout the entirety of the series. Even as a small child, he is quiet and serious, but very stubborn. He feels things very, very strongly, but he has a very stoic face, and until late in Wei Wuxian’s second life the only person who can really read him is his own brother. He earns himself a reputation as righteous, but very cold, pure and ascetic, and while he is highly respected, he isn’t one to socialize or make friends. That said, he is generally polite, honest, and very loyal to those he cares about—unfortunately for everyone, especially me, Wei Wuxian is at the very, very top of his List Of Important People and he will do literally anything that gremlin heart desires. UGH.
Motivations: The serious answer is that, in the simplest of terms, Lan Wangji is honestly just a good person. He was raised in a sect famous for their strict rules and scholarly pursuits, but at the heart of it all, he was taught to be "wherever the chaos is", and to help those in need, which is how he tries to live his life. He has a very big heart, and very deep feelings, and many of his actions are guided by the strength of his love—for his family, first and foremost, and later, for the man he chooses to stand beside, despite the disapproval of literally everyone else in the cultivation world. Even that comes from an appreciation for the goodness in Wei Wuxian’s heart—despite his own initial inner turmoil, Lan Wangji quickly recognizes that like him, Wei Wuxian is driven by an overwhelming desire to do good in the world, and throughout the story, Lan Wangji consistently shows respect for people who display similar traits.
The less serious but no less accurate answer is that he’s just really fucking gay and extra as hell which I was honestly tempted to put as his personality section and just leave at that LISTEN IT’S NO LESS ACCURATE!!!
